In This Very Room

This past Sunday, January 20, 2019, I attended worship at Central St. Matthew United Church of Christ here in New Orleans, LA. They were celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the choices of music and readings echoed the legacy of a man who strived to make the world a better place, for all human-kind.

The melody and lyrics of this song touched me, and resounded the life/vision that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held – a room where there is enough love, joy and hope for one like me, for all of us.

The choral call to communion was a song I had never heard before, In This Very Room by Ron & Carol Harris. The melody and lyrics of this song touched me, and resounded the life/vision that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held – a room where there is enough love, joy and hope for one like me, for all of us. While written in a New Orleans hotel room in 1979 the song resonates that in this very room – the room you are in now, your city, state and this world – there is enough love, hope and joy for all of us.

In This Very Room

In this very room there’s quite enough love for one like me,
And in this very room there’s quite enough joy for one like me,
And there’s quite enough hope and quite enough power to chase away any gloom,
For Jesus, Lord Jesus
Is in this very room.

And in this very room there’s quite enough love for all of us,
And in this very room there’s quite enough joy for all of us,
And there’s quite enough hope and quite enough power to chase away any gloom,
For Jesus, Lord Jesus
Is in this very room.
