Today I attended worship at Saint Charles Avenue Baptist Church here in New Orleans where they were celebrating 120 years as The Saint Charles Avenue Baptist Church. This church is a loving, welcoming community for all people and it shows. Pastor Lott preached a sermon of love, the welcoming spirit of the church, the challenges churches face and the changes in church over the years. Happy anniversary Saint Charles Avenue Baptist Church on 120 years – may God continue to bless you and keep your ministry thriving – sharing the good news and love of God to this community and the world.
At St. Charles, we aspire to serve God by asking questions, loving neighbors, seeking justice, and welcoming all. Whether you are a guest passing though town or seeking to grow in a community of faith, you can find a place at the table alongside persons from various traditions, ethnicities, viewpoints, and orientations. Whoever you are and wherever you are on life’s journey, we greet you with open minds, open hearts, and open arms. (http://www.scabc.org)
One of the scripture passages was from Philippians Chapter 1 – verse 6 stands out to me; “..being confident in this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus..” (NIV).
This scripture reminded me of a song I have played many times – He Who Began a Good Work in You – by Jon Mohr. The song is a statement that the one who started work in you will complete it. This can apply to our lives, churches, communities and our world. We should have faith knowing that God started great work and it will be completed.
God who began a good work in you,
God who began a good work in you
will be faithful to complete it,
will be faithful to complete it,
God who started the work
will be faithful to complete it in you.
