“Standing in The Need of Prayer”

“It’s me, it’s me, oh Lord,
Standing in the need of prayer.”
The song “Standing in the Need of Prayer” is an old African-American Spiritual with the author unknown. The song according to one story-writer has captured a difficult topic – speaking about our self and placing the work on us to recognize we need prayer too. We all need prayer. Pastor Allie spoke this past Sunday about Prayer 101 and how Jesus taught us to pray (the Lord’s Prayer). We pray for other people, things for our self or others such as; health, wealth, acceptance, and the list continues and is unique to each of us – but one thing is clear, we all need prayer and we all should continue praying.
This song has many verses, such as: not my brother or my sister but it’s me O Lord, or not my father or my mother… All the verses reference not anyone else, but places our self in the need of prayer. This song isn’t suggesting we stop praying for others, but that we sometimes too stand in need of prayer, not just for things, but also just for ourselves.
I often spend time praying for others, their needs and seem to forget about my own needs. Sometimes it’s hard to ask for prayer for myself, seeing the needs of others, our world. I forget to realize that we all need prayer, including myself.
Lets keep praying, praying for our families, our community, our country, our world and not forgetting ourselves.
