The Heart of Worship
On Wednesday, February 24, 2016 my mother and I went to MCC Baton Rouge to see Shawn Thomas in Concert. For those who don’t know about Shawn, he is an openly gay Christian singer with a wonderful story and a heart for Christ. Shawn is a special friend of mine, he produced my first solo album. At his concert he told the story about this song and I wanted to share it with you.
The story comes from a large church in Australia. This church had great resources, great music, lights, sounds, videos, as much as you can imagine. The senior pastor of the church was realizing that the church had become this show, the lights and sounds were overtaking the message, the message of Jesus. He had a meeting with the music director and said we are turning it all off. All the lights, videos, sounds were going off and it was time to focus on the message.
From that discussion the song was written and performed for the first time with an acoustic guitar and vocals only..
… When the music fades,
all is stripped away and I simply come…
WOW! What a message behind this song. Has church become too techie? Are we striving to put on a show and therefore losing the meaning of church? Losing the message of Jesus Christ and his love for us? Let’s all remember the message of Jesus, let’s not get overwhelmed by the lights and sounds and take the time to focus on the message.
…I’m coming back to the heart of worship…
