If anyone has kept up with my blog you remember me being asked to play for a United Church of Christ in New Orleans, due to the music director leaving, that fell through.. However I did receive a call two weeks ago stating things had changed, he was leaving again…
I was hesitant, I didn’t want to get my hopes up again to be let down. But after a series of meetings and conference calls I have decided to take the position. Beginning Sunday September 1, 2013 I will become the Interim Music Director for Central St. Matthew United Church of Christ in New Orleans. No, don’t worry, I’m not leaving MCC. I will work with both churches and due to different service times will play for both.
I am excited about this opportunity, it appears it will be a three month interim contract position, and that is perfect!! I have always wanted to do interim work as a music director and hope one day to do that for the MCC Denomination. The church has an established choir of 12-15 people, and a interim pastor doing great work there.
My only concern.. The previous music director was a doctor of music, professor of music at a local college and very structured in piano. I on the other hand, have no college/formal music training and very loose structure. I have a few church music theories that I have come to develop, and one day will write about them, but church should be fun, worshipful, uplifting, not to strict and structured. The choir and church members are truly excited about my arrival as interim, many know me personally and know my piano and choir skills. I don’t attest to being a great pianist or director however can say, I know church music, and since that is my goal.. I think I’m good!! 🙂
I am looking forward to this opportunity and the personal knowledge that will be gained from this experience.
Keep a close eye on my blog, I will share the entire experience with you..
Ryan
