Catholic Cathedral
New Orleans Area

Walking thru the french quarter pondering what I would experience in the oldest active cathedral in the U.S. As I entered I expected the quiet reflective time as experienced in other catholic churches, what I got was much more. The magnificent pipe organ was being played. The sound of the soft organ playing some quiet prelude music, some I knew some I didn’t.  As a musician this placed me in a more spiritual mood and prepared me for true worship.  The mass had a cantor in the front and the organ, trumpet and amazing choir in the balcony behind us.  This choir could sing!! On most songs they were singing a descant, as the cantor sung the melody. This created an interesting dynamic, which I haven’t heard before personally. The other downfall to this style was without knowing the song it was a little difficult to sing to, not having the music sheet, only the lyrics.

I have often admired the catholic church for the quieter more reflective style of worship and this experience was no different. As a member of an MCC church, the worship style was different, and for those who are not sure what MCC is… It’s the Metropolitan Community Church.

I was kinda saddened when mass ended, this experience left me wanting more! I truly enjoyed the music of the church and look forward to attending again to hear the organ, cantor and amazing choir.
